Who wouldn’t be excited to work for the Best Small Library in America?”
Nancy Radler, MLIS '14, was appointed prospect research specialist for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Deborah L. Rusin, MLIS '99, was inducted into the VIP Professional Woman of the Year Circle of the National Association of Professional Women. Rusin is director of library and research services at Katten Muchin Rosenman, LLP, in Chicago.

Donna Block, MLIS ’05 and teen services librarian at Niles (IL) Public Library District, co-authored “Teens Tread the Boards: Here’s What Happened,” a look at three library theater clubs published in the December 2015 issue of the ILA Reporter.
Gina Carter, MLIS ’13, was appointed senior services advisor at Arlington Heights (IL) Memorial Library.
Lauren Collen, MLIS/SLMP ‘05, library media specialist at Greenwood Elementary School in Woodstock, Illinois, is one of 20 finalists for the Golden Apple Excellence in Teaching Award. She was among 540 educators nominated for the award.
Amber Creger, MLIS ’05 and adjunct instructor, was appointed youth services director at the Schaumburg Township (IL) District Library.
Rachel Fischer, MLIS ’13, reported two key events in her professional life to Off the Shelf. She was promoted to library technical services specialist at YBP Library Services in Contoocook, New Hampshire. And the results of her 2015 survey of librarians who work for U.S. small town and rural libraries were published in Public Library Quarterly (Vol. 34) under the title “Rural and Small Town Library Management Challenges.” The survey found that “financial conditions had improved or will improve in the future” in small and rural libraries, where the “most challenging managerial issue was staffing.”
Renee Grassi, MLIS ‘09 and youth department director at Glen Ellyn (IL) Public Library, and Tony Lucarelli, MLIS ’09 and systems librarian at Fountaindale Public Library District in Bolingbrook, Illinois, published “Small Is Beautiful: Trimming Big Ideas Down to Size” in the December 2015 issue of the ILA Reporter. The essay tells the story of how “several Illinois librarians have adapted a project or concept institute by a larger library … and brought it into their own library of community.”
Anna Kim, MLIS/SLMP ’11 and library media specialist at Eliza Chappell Elementary in Chicago, was appointed intellectual freedom representative to the Illinois School Library Media Association Board for 2015-16.
Annabelle Mortensen, MLIS ’02, and collection development supervisor at Skokie (IL) Public Library, received the Readers’ Advisory Service Award at the 2015 Illinois Library Association annual conference.
Grace Radkins, MLIS ‘13, and Allison Schein, MLIS ‘12, presented “Take it easy, but take it…to new places,” a presentation on their work with the Studs Terkel Radio Archive, at the IASA (International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives) 2015 Annual Conference in Paris in September 2015. Presented in the Broadcast Archives section of the conference, the talk concerned “how we are reaching out to communities of new listeners, including local high school students; and the new technologies we're using to transcribe and share the programs,” said Radkins.
John Schumacher, MLIS/SLMP ’10, spoke with School Library Journal in October 2015 about his new job with Scholastic as ambassador for school libraries. Known as Mr. Schu to his students and on his popular blog and Twitter feed, Schumacher worked for 12 years as a teacher and teacher librarian at Brook Forest Elementary School in Oak Brook, Illinois, before leaving for the private sector. “In my new role at Scholastic Book Fairs, I will help evangelize the power and relevance of independent reading by speaking at conferences, developing and leading workshops, visiting schools, and spreading book love in person and online,” he told SLJ.
Brook Sievers, MLIS ’07 and head of materials management at Addison (IL) Public Library, received the TBS, Inc. Technical Services Award at the 2015 Illinois Library Association annual conference.
Anne Slaughter, MLIS ‘06 and director of technology services for the Reaching Across Illinois Library System, received the Crosman Memorial Award at the 2015 Illinois Library Association annual conference. The award “recognizes the achievements of the library workers who are new or relatively new to the field and encourages continued involvement in the profession.”
Claire Stewart, MLIS ’95, was named a 2016-17 Leadership Fellow by the Association of Research Libraries. The “executive leadership program facilitates the development of future senior-level leaders in large research libraries and archives,” according to an ARL news release.
Ten drawings by Daniel Weinberg, MLIS ’00 and technical services manager at Gary Public Library, are on display through January 30 at Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art in Chicago.

Elizabeth (Betty) Buenning, MLIS '07 and library media specialist at Lake Zurich (IL) Middle School South, will use a grant of over $20,000 from the District #95 Foundation to convert her school’s library into what she describes as a “totally reconfigurable space.”
Doris Cardenas, MLIS ‘15, was appointed assistant archivist at the Claretian Missionaries Archive in Chicago.
Chad Comello, MLIS '13, was appointed adult services librarian at Morton Grove (IL) Public Library.
Monica Dombrowski, MLIS ’08, and Melissa Bernasek, MLIS ’06, received a 2015 Carnegie-Whitney Grant from the ALA Publishing Committee for Gail’s Toolkit, which Dombrowski describes as “an online portal for sharing content that can be used to teach technology classes in libraries.” Launched September 29, 2015, the portal includes lesson plans, presentations, activity sheets, handouts, and surveys. Both grads are employees of Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin, Illinois, Dombrowski as technology education manager and Bernasek as information services director.  The Chicago Tribune reported on the $5,000 grant and Gail Borden’s technology initiatives in March.
Liz Hamilton, MLIS ’15, was awarded the 2015 Julia C. Blixrud Scholarship by the Association of Research Libraries. The scholarship allows an “individual who is innovative and active in areas of interest to the ARL community” to attend the ARL Fall Forum. As part of her scholarship application, Hamilton submitted an infographic, “How Do Library and University Press Collaborations Advance Digital Scholarship in the Humanities and Social Sciences,” that ARL subsequently added to its online collection of publications and resources. In addition, Hamilton was recently appointed intellectual property specialist at Northwestern University Press and Libraries.

Debra Nelson, MLIS ’15, was appointed director of the Elk Grove Village (IL) Public Library.

Marci Merola, MLIS ‘11, and her bookshelves were featured in Printers Row Journal and on chicagotribune.com in May. The opening sentence: “Stories of unsung artists, poets and political activists, particularly those of Italian and Mexican descent, populate the bookshelves of Marci Merola's Logan Square home.”
Corinne H. Miller, MLIS ‘12, was appointed reference librarian and outreach coordinator at the Library of Rush University Medical Center.
Philip Sulentic, MLIS ‘14, was appointed stock footage film researcher at the WPA Film Library in Orland Park, Illinois.
Rebecca Vnuk, MLIS '99 and editor for reference and collection management at Booklist, published The Weeding Handbook: A Shelf-by-Shelf Guide (ALA Editions). “I find no one is ambivalent about weeding -- people either love it or loathe it,” Vnuk writes in the introduction. “I fall into the love-it camp. In fact, I once imagined my perfect career would be traveling from library to library across the nation, weeding collections”.

Adomenas, MLIS '05 was appointed director of film and audio archives at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, and continues in her capacity as director of Lithuanian Archives Project (LAP), a 501(c)3 in Illinois. The Balzekas Museum, located at 6500 S. Pulaski in Chicago, is looking for volunteer docents, programs/events coordinators, community outreach coordinators, high school liaisons, catalogers, librarians, archivists, and assistants in digitizing historic audio recordings.
