Allison Schein MLIS ’12
Trained as an audio engineer, Allison Schein got interested in archiving after volunteering at an audio archive.
She earned her Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from Dominican University in 2012 and is now the Studs Terkel Radio Archive manager at WFMT Radio Network in Chicago, where Terkel broadcast for 46 years and recorded oral histories of common Americans.
“I would not be where I am today without my education at Dominican,” said Schein, who credits Dominican with giving her the foundation of archival theory, as well as the technical skills of grant writing, cataloging, managing an online database, creating a website and engaging the community.
“It gave me a launch pad for my passion of taking the Studs Terkel Archive into schools and the community, and teaching the community how to use new technology to make new works based off the Studs Terkel programming,” she said.
As a Dominican alumna, she’s opened up the archive to internship opportunities for Dominican GSLIS students. Through the partnership, Dominican students transcribed Terkel’s interviews, curated an exhibit at a Studs Terkel festival, created audio collages, and went to the Library of Congress’ Packard Campus where they spent a couple days cataloging off of the original Terkel tapes which are digitized there.
“I look forward to strengthening the relationship with Dominican to ensure the success of the archive and to definitely enhance the students' experiences,” Schein said.
