Academics & Programs
The world is changing. Technology is evolving. And information is the single most important commodity across the globe. So it’s crucial for all of us that we have bright, sharp and passionate individuals shaping the way libraries and other institutions gather, store and disseminate information.
At the School of Information Studies, those are exactly the kind of library leaders our programs are designed to produce. Leaders who transcend the traditional role of “librarian” and foster a culture of innovation at institutions everywhere.
Library and Information Science Degrees and Programs
Master of Library & Information Science (MLIS)
Recognized nationally for its quality and commitment to staying at the forefront of the field, this program delivers the broad range of skills needed by all librarians, as well as a solid foundation for advanced study depending on your career path. Please view the MLIS Course Rotation Guide to see in which semester/s, and in which format/s (online, in-person, or blended) courses are typically offered.
Master of Science in Information Management (MSIM)
Dominican’s new master’s degree program in information management aims to give professionals the expertise and skills they need to provide leadership in our data-rich world, by exploring the problems and possibilities of information architecture, information security, data analytics, data visualization, user experience design, and digital content management.
Master of Professional Studies in Library & Information Science (MPS)
The MPS program is designed to help you deepen your knowledge in a particular area of study, explore new ways to cross disciplinary boundaries, and acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for career growth.
Doctor of Philosophy in Library & Information Science (Ph.D.)
For professionals looking to expand their vision and career opportunities, the PhD program delivers a challenging, intellectually engaging curriculum in a way that doesn’t interfere with current personal and professional obligations.
Dual Degree Programs
Our dual degree programs enable students to complement their master’s degree in library and information science with a second master’s degree in another area of study, ultimately broadening their knowledge base and making themselves more marketable to employers.
Our certificate programs offer an ideal solution for library leaders who have already earned their advanced degree—or are in the process of earning it—and would like to add a specialization to enhance their knowledge and position themselves for career advancement.
Students with senior standing at Dominican University, with the consent of their academic advisor and the dean of SOIS, may be admitted to take up to six semester hours of courses in SOIS.
It is recommended that the student take one course per semester. These six hours may be applied to both the bachelor's degree and the MLIS or MSIM degree, thereby reducing the time required to complete the MLIS or MSIM degree.
AAS/LTA to BA/BS to MLIS Accelerated
Students pursuing an associate in applied science degree (AAS) or a certificate in library and information technology (LTA) at College of DuPage may transfer to Dominican's Rosary College of Arts and Sciences to complete a baccalaureate degree, then Dominican's GSLIS to complete the master of library and information science (MLIS). Students in this program may take advantage of the Undergraduate Accelerated opportunity, above, and LTA holders receive a 50% tuition discount for the first four core MLIS courses. For more information or to apply, please contact Michael Morsovillo, director of transfer admission.
